The English and Wales Pitted Together for RWC 2027 in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was overseen by rugby icons such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side together with Wales have been drawn in the same group for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a highly-anticipated pool stage encounter in Australia. Completing the group in Group F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This pairing echoes their infamous clash in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at England's home ground contributed to the hosts' surprise group stage elimination.

Key Pool Pairings

The Irish and the Scots also share a pool once again, replicating the situation from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, Ireland claimed a 36-14 win, with Scotland unable to progress to the quarter-finals.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, both made a strong impression as underdogs in the last World Cup, complete that Pool D.

Notably, the victors of these two groups are kept apart from defending champions and world number one South Africa until the showpiece match, assuming the Springboks top their own group.

Tournament Implications

If the pools play out according to the current world rankings, other top favourites like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from the likes of England and the Irish all the way to the championship decider.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the other top-ranked nation on the same half of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Hosts Face Blockbuster Fixture

Tournament hosts the Wallabies have been drawn alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Pool A.

Australia will open the tournament in the city of Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee fixture designed to jump-start the event.

Elsewhere, holders the Springboks have been paired with Italy, the Lelos and Romania. France are in a pool with Japan, future hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Argentina will face Fiji, Spain and Canada as the World Cup expands to 24 teams from the twenty who took part in France.

This edition will introduce a round of 16 round for the first time in Rugby World Cup history.

Although the winner of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the game's biggest beasts early on, they will meet the second-placed team from Group B – probably the Italians – in the first knockout round.

Four of the remaining six pool winners will face a third-placed side from the pool stages.
