Uche Ignites Dominant Palace Win at Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their maiden continental campaign, Crystal Palace are adapting at a rapid pace. Missing key players like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the London club left Dublin with a commanding result that all but guarantees them a place in the Conference League qualifying rounds.
Another three points in their next match against Finland's KuPS should be sufficient to seal straight entry to the last 16, particularly following a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Seize the Moment
This occasion offered a platform for some of Palace's lesser-used talent to impress. Christantus Uche, making only his second beginning after arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a clinical goal. Forward Eddie Nketiah contributed a another, scoring for the second consecutive match.
The Shelbourne side that had finished their domestic season were outmatched against a mostly rotated Palace outfit. The visitors were already depleted by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with knee problems.
Control Asserted from the Start
In spite of heavy rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A slick move in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, allowed Nketiah to lay on Uche for a simple tap-in.
Youngster Adam Wharton went close minutes later, driving a long-range effort over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after bursting into the area, but the referee dismissed the protests.
The formerArsenal striker didn't need to wait long to get his goal, tapping home from close range after Uche's effort had struck the post.
The home side were hanging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for a couple of robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Wraps Up the Contest
The match was effectively over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past some comically weak challenges before coolly slotting a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
After the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to withdraw key players like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse came close to scoring with his very first touch, only to see his effort blocked.
The youngster was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt strike off both posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also missed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still room for development in his game.
A solitary worry for Palace was a second-half injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise perfect evening for the visiting side.
