New research suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People buying these medications must be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through dieting usually see a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Experts propose the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
People who have come off the jabs explain a intense return of hunger.
"It was like a trigger flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
This challenge is worsened if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
